Celios Study Findings: Economic Impact of the Sumatra Flood Disaster
🗣️ Ecological disasters in Sumatra in November 2025 are projected to have caused economic losses of Rp68.67 trillion. This figure includes damage to residents’ homes, loss of household income, damage to road and bridge infrastructure, and lost agricultural production from farmland inundated by floods and landslides.
🗣️ Specifically, Aceh Province is projected to suffer losses of Rp2.2 trillion. North Sumatra is projected to lose Rp2.07 trillion and West Sumatra Rp2.01 trillion.
🗣️ Ecological disasters are driven by land-use conversion resulting from deforestation for palm oil plantations and mining. Meanwhile, the contributions of mining and palm oil to Aceh Province, for example, are not commensurate with the losses caused by the resulting disasters.
🗣️ Celios is calling for an immediate moratorium on mining permits and the expansion of palm oil plantations. It is time to shift to a more sustainable economy— a restorative economy. Without a structural change to the economy, ecological disasters will recur, bringing far greater economic losses.
